Help your students bring immigration history and politics to life!
Immigration issues dominate the news just now, and they present a great opportunity for a curriculum or service project. Your students can bring back powerful interviews if they venture into their communities to talk to the immigrants they know about their experiences.
WKCD learned this, when we coached and then published such work by New York City students in our photo essay book, FORTY-CENT TIP: STORIES BY NEW YORK CITY IMMIGRANT WORKERS (Next Generation Press, 2006).
Now we are offering you a look at our coaching guidelines--and a chance to be published on line--in the hope that you will try the project, too.
WKCD offers the following resources to help with your project:
-- A manual for teachers and students.
-- A complimentary copy of the WKCD book FORTY-CENT TIP—or a classroom set, at cost, as long as supplies last.
We look forward to hearing from you--and to publishing the inspiring work produced by your students, wherever you may be. If you already have immigrant stories collected by your students that you’d like us to see and perhaps publish online, please send them to: info@whatkidscando.org.
To get the details, download the manual, and order a complimentary copy of the book, please go to: http://www.whatkidscando.org/featurestories/2008/01_great_american/index.html
To read more about Forty-Cent Tip by students from three of NYC's international high schools, please go to: http://www.nextgenerationpress.org/titles/fortycenttip.html
WKCD (What Kids Can Do) brings youth voices to bear on important issues in our schools and society. Check out our other sites, too: www.nextgenerationpress.org, www.firstinthefamily.org, www.inourvillage,org, www.lifeinnewchina.org. Next Generation press is WKCD's publishing arm. MEET ME AT THE CORNER, Virtual Field Trips for Kids, is an interactive
site that encourages individual expression and participation through video
submissions from children worldwide, featuring their special corner of the
world. The first video podcasts focus on the people, events and history
of New York City. Each program highlights the talents, diversity and
accomplishments of the people of New York through explorations of the city,
block by block. As the site grows through children’s submissions, the people
and events of other towns, cities and nations will be highlighted.

Travel the Seven Continents
TeachersFirst’s Globetracker’s Mission is an engaging way for
students in grades 2–6 to learn geography, map skills and world cultures
through an episodic story. Each week, a new episode, in the format of a blog
post, appears on the Globetracker’s Mission site. The “blog” is written by
fictional teenagers Geo and Meri as they travel the seven continents of the
world on a secret “mission” for an unnamed government agency. They seek
clues and travel under the supervision of their Uncle Globetracker, writing the
“blog” as part of their requirements for missing high school work. Classes
who follow the mission learn standards-based terms and concepts of world
geography as they respond to Geo and Meri’s think-aloud questions, using maps,
images and links that Geo and Meri provide. Concepts include landforms, map
skills, cultures, major landmarks, continents, oceans, rivers—and more.

(fyi, For newer folks, Google Earth is a free download from Google for Macs or Windows machines)
Hi,
I recently heard about an exciting competition run by Google and thought you might be interested. It's called Doodle 4 Google, and it offers students all over the country the chance to design the Google logo, and perhaps have their artwork viewed by people all over the world.
The Doodle 4 Google theme is "What if...?" Here are some examples of what this could mean:
- What if...I could live underwater, or in outer space, or in Colonial America?
- What if...I could see into the future?
- What if...I could build any kind of invention I wanted?
But your students are encouraged to come up with their own ideas about this theme. The competition is open to K-12 students between 5 and 18. An expert panel will pick 40 finalists who'll be invited to a workshop with Google's official doodler, Dennis Hwang, at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. The U.S. public will vote for their favorites, and the winning design will replace the regular Google homepage on May 22, 2008. This champion doodler will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and his or her school will receive a $25,000 technology grant.
How to participate?
Please visit www.google.com/doodle4google. You'll find all the dates and resources you'll need to get your school involved, including detailed lesson plans to help incorporate the competition into your curricula. reetings All,
Unless something pressing comes up, this will probably be my last Friday Tech missive for awhile.
The reason?
Because I set up a Blog on which to post my content:
http://millertime.edublogs.org/
If you wish to continue receiving my tech contributions, then keep checking the address above whenever you think of it, or sign up for an email subscription, or an RSS feed. Don't know what an RSS feed is? Consult the "2.0 Web" button on my Blog.
I created the blog because I needed to keep a diary of reflections for my "Gaming & Simulations" master's course meeting in Second Life:
In addition, I had numerous District Liaisons ask to be kept informed about what I learn about learning from within a virtual world environment.
Most importantly, I wanted to have a place to post supportive technology links for the instructors at my school (currently under development).
Lastly, I wanted a place to share my technology musings (also under development).
If you, or an educator you know, is wanting a Blog, I have been happy with: http://edublogs.org/ They are a subsidiary of WordPress; however, give 100mb of free space rather than the 50mb of space that regular WP offers.
Here are some compelling reasons for educators to begin blogging if you do not wish to deal with the learning curve of web page creation:
http://edublogs.org/10-ways-to-use-your-edublog-to-teach/
I have posted my "21st Century Skills" and "Web 2.0" summaries in permanent pages linked to the top buttons. If you ever need to describe these terms to people, feel free to download and share them.
Also, if you have yet to see a Clustr Map, look at the one in my sidebar. There are only a few hits because it updates once per day and I only launched the Blog a few days ago, but you'll get the idea...a really simple yet visually cool idea!
This brings me to a Wiki offer I was given when I signed up for my edublog, and I'd like to share with you all:
http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K
Although I have used and been VERY happy with Peanut Butter Wikis, http://pbwiki.com/ I could not pass up the opportunity to have a free upgrade to the plus package at Wikispaces:
http://www.wikispaces.com/site/pricing
What is a wiki? Refer to the "2.0 Web" button in my Blog.
Not sure if you will immediately use a wiki?
Sign up for the Plus plan anyway, play around with it, and imagine how you could use it in your classes when you decide you are ready.
By the way, did I mention that they are only giving away 100,000 plans and that they are already at 60,000?
Hopefully I'll see you(r comments) in my Techcellent Blogotage, Craig

Hey Liaisons
I have had a few of you ask about that Did you know/Shift Happens video. It is a very large file, but you can get it off of our web page at http://www.pvusd.net/Departments/Business_Services/technology/tcip/index.html
It could be compressed to be much smaller, but who has the time? -D
I recently wrote a "Not So Tall Technology Tale" (Attached) to illustrate the rapid translation and sharing of media possible in our digital age. Little did I know at the time that something similar would actually happen to me in real life…
My mother and father called me cell to cell from Hawaii during my school’s winter break. I was in a cafe at the time. They told me to check out the webcam at Napili Kai resort where they were staying.
http://www.napilikai.com/webcam.html
As it turned out, the cool thing about this webcam is that it is user controllable. I jumped on the wireless connection in the cafe, and immediately took control.
As I was manipulating the camera, I directed my folks to the location I was viewing in real time.
I took a screenshot of them and immediately emailed it to their account.
After we hung up, they walked into the lobby in order to access the hotel's internet-connected computers.
They then downloaded, opened, and printed the photo that I had taken.
All this took less than 10 minutes.
