Spring is just around the corner and we've been in the spirit of cleaning - cleaning out our inboxes, that is. We came across an interesting article sent to us by a colleague about the importance of not just using technology in the classroom but also teaching strategic computer skills. We encourage you to read the article <http://email.answers.com/c.asp?thmJsCYd8PgB0J3jlLBC5QJJy0YFTWKOtM4Bq5hfhYIg> and try our lesson plans, which borrow ideas from Jakob Nielson's <http://email.answers.com/c.asp?RZCMmByc3FM6q+sqAUkVogJJy0YFTWKOtM4Bq5hfhYIg> article. Let us know if you do.
We also wanted to share the new spin we've put on a classic Answers.com feature: AnswerTips <http://email.answers.com/c.asp?IGwytHiYfo2r7L+F8KRKcQJJy0YFTWKOtM4Bq5hfhYIg> T for your blog or website. AnswerTips are small bubbles of information triggered by double-clicking any word on an AnswerTips-enabled page. AnswerTips-enabling your classroom blog and website will give your students the ability to access quick definitions and explanations, while keeping them focused on the task at hand. All you need to do is paste a simple code into your site's or blog's HTML; you'll find the details here <http://email.answers.com/c.asp?RNobY7/KDLs05ImHm4ryvwJJy0YFTWKOtM4Bq5hfhYIg> .A find for math specialists at CUE last weekend. Hello all,
Sketchup is very cool, but in an abstract kind of way. What if you could actually hold an item you designed in Sketchup? A free program called Pepakura will take your Sketchup design and will “unfold” it for you. The unfolding adds tabs to glue together the different sides and dashed lines so you know where to fold. It’s very, very cool to actually build an item you designed in Sketchup and removes the abstract nature of your design. Pepakura is Windows only, but free. The link to get it is below. The official Pepakura page is blocked, but Robin retrieved the installer for me and I will leave it on our server until the end of the month.
http://www.aptosjr.pvusd.net/johnsimms/pepakura_designer_en_v212_setup.exeI think having a program like Pepakura really opens up more interesting classroom opportunities for using Sketchup. Here are the basics to get you going with Pepakura.
1. Build your design in Sketchup (I built a cool house using techniques Dan showed us)
2. Export it (File->Export) from Sketchup. You have to export it as Google Earth 4 format.
3. Launch Pepakura.
4. Open your exported Sketchup file.
5. Click Unfold button. If you need to rotate the unfolded version so you can make it bigger, click on the Part Rotate button. It’s three circles with red lines connecting them. Then click on one of the vertexes in your design to rotate it. You can make the unfolded version bigger by going to the menu 2DPatternWindow and choosing Scale Up Development 10% as many times as necessary.
6.Print. Fold. Glue/tape. Enjoy.
Sincerely,
John Simms

What's New in Google Earth
Last month, we released two significant updates to the Google Earth content. First, we updated some of the imagery to include new high resolution coverage for the entire countries of Denmark and Switzerland, and the entire states of Utah and Wyoming. More importantly for Switzerland, we also added new high resolution 3D terrain for the Swiss Alps at 10 meter resolution. We think the new imagery and terrain for the Swiss Alps are beautiful to behold. But, don't take our word for it, check out a review (http://www.ogleearth.com/2007/03/google_earth_up_2.html ) from blogger Stefan Geens of http://OgleEarth.com, and a YouTube video flying tour ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7RJhQQGya8 ) of the Swiss Alps by blogger Frank Taylor of Gearthblog.com ( http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2007/03/swiss_alps_jet_fight.html ). Or, better yet, go visit the area yourself with Google Earth 4 - starting with the Matterhorn ( http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/z0302a1700/Matterhorn.kmz ) (make sure the Terrain layer is turned on). More details on the imagery update here ( http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/815618/ ).
Also updated last month were several data layers including all new detailed roads (and directions) for Australia, more 3D buildings, new icon designs for the layers, over 300,000 new photos in the Geographic Web->Panoramio layer, and all new data for the Parks and Recreation layer for the country of Brazil. In addition, there were updates to the Google Earth Community layers, Turn Here, Tracks4Africa, and the Digital Globe coverage layer.

National Geographic "Ivory Wars"
The March issue of National Geographic has a cover story entitled: "Ivory Wars - Last stand in Zakouma" by Michael Fay ( http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0703/feature1/index.html ). The article tells the story of the world's largest concentration of elephants protected at the Zakouma National Park in southeastern Chad. There is a continuing battle to prevent poachers from killing these magnificent intelligent creatures for a few pounds of ivory. One elephant they called "Annie" was tracked by GPS for 3 months, but sadly ended up a victim of this gruesome crime. National Geographic has also published ( http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0703/feature1/google.html ) a comprehensive collection of information for Google Earth ( http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0703/feature1/zakouma_ivory_wars.kmz ) tied to this story. The areas of the park, roads, and streams are all highlighted along with photos and links to more information. Also included is a layer called Annie's Journey which shows the GPS track of the elephant Annie which covered 1500 miles before the abrupt ending. Using the time feature in Google Earth you can even watch an animation of Annie's track as she wandered in and out of the park.
By the way, Michael Fay is the same journalist who took 92,000 photos from an airplane over Africa. Over 500 of these photos are shown in Google Earth and found under under the layer: Featured Content->National Geographic Magazine->Africa Megaflyover. See this collection (
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=138835 ) of categorized African animals from the photos.

NASA Releases Environmental Satellite Data
Last month, we mentioned ( http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/807792/an/0/page/0#sec4 ) the new NASA Satellite Photos for Google Earth which you can check each day. Now NASA has released ( http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17559 ) more data for Google Earth from the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellites ( http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ ) . This time they have full-globe image overlays which show the following:
MODIS Sea Surface Temperature ( http://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/RenderData?si=413883&cs=rgb&format=application/vnd.google-earth.kmz ) MODIS Chlorophyll Concentration ( http://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/RenderData?si=379351&cs=rgb&format=application/vnd.google-earth.kmz ) MODIS Cloud Fraction ( http://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/RenderData?si=367576&cs=rgb&format=application/vnd.google-earth.kmz ) MODIS Snow Cover ( http://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/RenderData?si=398064&cs=rgb&format=application/vnd.google-earth.kmz )
You should delete, or turn off, each image overlay from "Temporary Places" before loading the next one so they don't interefere with each other. The data is the most current data provided by NASA's environmental satellites.

BBC Dance Mat Typing
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/
*****
Dance Mat Typing is a fun musical introduction to touch typing for kids seven and older. Practice is divided into twelve lessons, and led by animated characters. I recommend the full screen version (this link is just below the lesson.) Parents and teachers wanting to know what keys are taught in each level, can click over to About this Site. For additional offline practice, print out the Worksheets (look for them in the left-hand menu.)
Free Typing Game
http://www.freetypinggame.net/
*****
Despite the title, there is more than one typing game here. In fact, there are six arcade-style typing games, thirty keyboarding lessons and thirty timed typing tests (with printable certificates.) The lessons feature a keyboard that is color-coded to each our of ten fingers, and each lesson introduces two keys, and then reviews all the keys from previous lessons. I found the two letter practice ("ttu uuu ttt utt") to be much more difficult than typing real words, but I already know how to type, so I may not be a good judge here.
Good Typing
*****
Although there are lessons you can try without filling out the free registration, you need to register with your email address to gain access to all the features here at Good Typing. One of those features is the ability to choose your country-specific keyboard layout. The clean, uncluttered interface gets a thumbs up from me. I also like the fact that it gave me recommendations as to whether I should repeat a lesson (based on my accuracy) but still gave me the option to move ahead. Good Typing has no kid-specific features, but its straightforward approach should work with all ages.
